Ireland’s deputy premier said some issues still need to be ironed out but Northern Ireland’s economic performance shows it has been “a success” trade between the north and south has “increased dramatically”.

Mr Varadkar added: “It was designed to make sure that there was no hard border between North and South that there isn’t.

“It was designed to protect our place in the single market and it has.”

Liz Truss will speak to her EU counterpart, Maros Sefcovic, on Tuesday after saying she wants to negotiate a “comprehensive solution” to the Northern Ireland protocol.

‘We just try to work with whoever’s there’

Addressing Lord Frost’s resignation, Ireland’s deputy premier, Leo Varadkar said Dublin is happy to work with whoever the UK puts in charge.

Mr Varadkar said: “From our point of view, when it comes to dealing with the UK Government, we just try to work with whoever’s there.

“There’s been a change of Prime Minister, there’s been several Brexit secretaries, several foreign secretaries, several Northern Ireland secretaries.
