Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was leader of the Commons, will become a member of the cabinet in his new role, Downing Street said. The change comes at a time where the Prime Minister is desperately trying to bring mutinous MPs back under his wing following the exposure of several Downing Street parties during lockdown.

The role has been newly created as Brexit negotiations continue, with ministers saying it is involved in “setting the strategy for the Government’s ambitious approach to regulation, reviewing and reforming existing policy and regulation, and supporting the scrutiny and introduction of new regulation”.

Mr Rees-Mogg takes on part of the role vacated by Lord Frost, who resigned as Brexit Minister in December over the direction of Mr Johnson’s Government.

A spokesperson said the appointment demonstrates the “emphasis the prime minister places on further seeking out ways to make the most of leaving the EU.”

Mr Rees-Mogg has been one of the arch Brexiteers since even before the UK voted to leave the bloc in the 2016 referendum.

He became a leading voice for a hard Brexit prior to the end of the transition period in 2021, and was one of the earliest supporters of Mr Johnson’s leadership bid in 2019, who promised to “get Brexit done”.

He is a popular figure for Brexiteers who see him as one of the leading parliament forces on the matter.

But as he’s well known for making controversial statements, what are some of Mr Rees Moggs most memorable quotes on Brexit?
