Abandoned Staffie’s new life as protection dog for royal family events

An abandoned Staffordshire Bull Terrier got a second chance at life as a protection dog for VIP events, including those for the royal family.

Roxy was abandoned as a pup, and was rescued by RSPCA officers in 2017. Since then, she had undergone police dog training and became the firstStaffie to become an explosives search dog in the UK.

Despite usually only working with German Shepherds, Labradors and Spaniels, theHampshire and Thames Valley police saw Roxy's potential and added her to theirspecialist search unit.

She now lives a thrilling life working at VIP events, including Princess Beatrice’s wedding and the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, TeamDogs reports.

“Roxy was the right age, was good around people and other dogs, and was really confident,” RSPCA supervisor Sue Dicks said.

“She was also very ball-focused – something that's really important in training – and was incredibly determined.”

Roxy completed her training with partner PC Camilla Carter in February 2020, and is now trained to detect the scent of explosives and carry out security sweeps before high-profile public events and VIP visits.

"Her story: Roxy was rescued by the RSPCA after being abandoned. She now works with PC Camilla Carter in the Hampshire and Thames JOU Specialist Search Section.

"As far as we know, PD Roxy is the only Explosive Search Staffie in the country. She's a star".

Roxy, along with her team, searches for suspicious packages, sweeps venues ahead of royal visits, responds to bomb threats, and searches private jets.

Pc Carter said: “I'm incredibly proud of her for carrying out such an important job ahead of such large events, both happy and sad.

“Roxy is a superstar. She is intelligent, very systematic, and thorough. I love working by her side, she's my crew mate and we have each other's backs.

“I'm sure she was born to do this; I couldn't imagine her doing anything else.”
