An unsuspecting man has recalled the moment he discovered a secret treasure trove worth thousands of pounds in his grandparents' house.
Redditor EvilEnglish, from Tenessee, had been cleaning his late grandparents' home in preparation to sell it when he happened upon the stash.
Posting to the internet forum, he said his grandparents had lived in the property for 20 years. After the poster's grandfather passed away in 1998, his grandmother left the house, never to return.
The property was eventually inherited by the poster's father before falling into his hands and he was given the task of readying it for sale.
According to the now deleted post, the user said the house had been in a state of neglect, having been left empty for two decades, but something special was hidden amongst the cobwebs.
While cleaning the house, the user discovered a closet under the staircase with an old rug in it. When he listed the dusty carpet, he was shocked by what he found.
He wrote: “I pushed the carpet back further and saw a round cap with a circle indentation on it. I pulled off the cap and … A Secret Safe!”
The user spent a few days trying t crack the safe to try and find out what had been hidden away.
Unable to open the safe by himself, he called Major Safe Co. and hired a locksmith, according to information on imgur.
The locksmith struggle to break the safe open initially. The user recalled: "He said about 30 mins into this that if he had known what he was getting into, he would have referred the job to someone else."
Eventually the locksmith managed to break open the safe, revealing a treasure trove of antique items such as rare coins, silver bars and other valuable treasure his grandparents had stashed away.
“I knew my grandmother collected coins, but I thought we had found all of them!” he wrote.
The box had suffered some water damage while it was hidden in the closet due to a pipe leak, but the valuables inside were intact.
An exact evaluation is yet to take place, however it is estimated the haul is worth tens of thousands of pounds.
Another Redditor pointed out the prestige set of coins could be worth $20 (£16) each, with the silver coins fetching even more on the market.
“At the moment their melt value is 17.3 times face value,” the user wrote. “With low silver prices and extremely high demand for physical silver, most respectable dealers will pay you melt right now.”
The silver bars, meanwhile, were estimated to be worth around $24 (£19) each. The safe also contained a heft amount in cold hard cash.
But the user was most pleased with one object in particular – a jewellery box which had just as much sentimental value as it did monetary value.
The box brought back the poster's memories of reading Treasure Island with his grandparents, and he fondly recalled wishing he could find a box of jewels of his own.
When the user looked beneath the house's coffee table, he found yet another safe containing a collection of antique pistols hidden by his grandfather, who was an avid artillery collector.
The post has since been deleted, and the user is debating whether to sell off the treasure trove or keep the artefacts as memories.
