Charles branded ‘atrocious’ for ‘abandoning’ Diana minutes after Harry’s birth

Prince Charles has been labelled "atrocious" for leaving to play Polo minutes after Princess Diana gave birth to their son Prince Harry in 1984.

In a new ITV documentary, The Diana Interview: Revenge Of A Princess, a photographer recalled being shocked when he was told the Prince of Wales was "abandoning" his wife so soon after the birth.

Ken Lennox, waiting outside St Mary's Hospital in London to take pictures of the couple and their newborn son, said he found the rumour so ridiculous he bet £50 it wasn't true – and lost.

In an interview for the documentary, which airs at 9pm tonight and tomorrow, he says: "I’m standing outside the hospital and Jimmy Gray who was a Daily Mail royal photographer at the time.

"He said to me 'Do you know he's [Prince Charles] going to leave here and go and play Polo?'

The two photographers agreed to bet £50 on whether or not Prince Charles would go to play Polo, because Ken still refused to believe it was true.

Roughly one hour later, the Prince of Wales left Diana and his infant son to do exactly that.

Ken says: "I lost £50 because I couldn’t believe that a man with a newborn baby was going to leg it and play some daft game of Polo.

"Doing something like that to a wife with a newborn baby was atrocious.

"If he thought he could treat his wife that, he was in deep trouble."

Diana's biographer Andrew Morton described Prince Harry's birth as a "symbolic moment" and a time the princess herself described as when the "shutters came down".

He told ITV: "You can almost date the end of the marriage to that period."

Prince Harry has previously told of how he will regret his final phone call with his mum "for the rest of my life" when she telephoned from Paris shortly before her death.

The Diana Interview: Revenge Of A Princess is showing on ITV 9pm tonight and tomorrow (November 9 and 10)
