Denver ranks among the most polluted cities in the world

It is no secret that Denver’s air quality has been bad this past month. But if you look at how it compares on a global scale, you might be surprised on how high the city ranks.

On Friday morning, Denver ranked in the top 10 of cities across the world with the worst air quality and pollution.

According to IQAir, Denver ranked No. 9 on the list early Friday morning. Even worse, the city ranked in the top five just a day before.

And while Denver prides itself on doing everything it can to mitigate all kinds of pollution, the city cannot quite stop this one. The increased smoke Denver has been seeing is from forest fires in the Pacific Northwest and southwest Canada.

Air quality alerts continue to be in place for the city, and Friday marks the 32nd consecutive day of those alerts. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says that the air will continue to be unhealthy for those with respiratory issues and urges residents to limit time outdoors.

The latest smoke forecast for Friday shows Denver to have a break during the day, but according to the National Weather Service, another plume arrives by late evening.

With the pattern shift, smoke will return this weekend and so will the mostly dry conditions and hot temperatures. Denver is forecast to see 90s this weekend which will only add to our increased ozone levels.
