Callous flytippers had their truck confiscated when they were caught red-handed after the vehicle got stuck in mud.

The Mercedes Sprinter – loaded with old toys and other household waste – was found in a country lane in Kent on Boxing Day.

Two men were questioned at the scene by cops who seized the vehicle when it was found to have no road tax.

PC Ian Loft, of Kent Police's Tactical Operations team, said: "A van used to fly-tip household waste in a secluded area near Maidstone has been seized.

"The Mercedes Sprinter van was confiscated after officers attended a rural location at Pendenden Heath on Boxing Day.

"We were called at 5.45pm to a report from a member of the public that the van had become stuck in mud, after rubbish as well as old toys and children’s scooters were dumped in a wooded area.

"Two men were questioned at scene. The vehicle was also found to have no road tax and seized.

"The matter has now been referred to Maidstone Borough Council for further action and which has responsibility for dealing with fly-tipping."

He added: ‘Fly-tipping is a scourge on our communities and an issue which we work hard to combat, in conjunction with our partners including the relevant local authorities.

"It is likely these men will now face significant fines for their actions.

"Residents also need to be vigilant when paying for people to dispose of rubbish, including rubble and building materials. Remember to check for a valid waste carrier licence before hiring anyone.

"In this instance neither of the men had a licence, which ultimately means anyone found to have employed them could also face financial penalties."
