‘Hero’ young men attacked as they ‘tried to stop two girls being raped’

Two young men risked their own safety as they rushed to the aid of two women who were "being raped" according to reports.

Staffordshire Police are still searching for the attackers after the incident in Hanley, which left the young men in hospital with serious injuries.

Friends and relatives of the men – who are aged 19 and 25 – have told how they stepped in after seeing the two girls in distress in the early hours of Sunday morning.

One of the men who was attacked when he intervened was left needing facial reconstruction surgery, which he got at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, StokeonTrent Live reported.

It comes as Staffordshire Police are still to make any arrests following the attack at 5.18am on Sunday, September 5.

Relatives and friends of the men lauded their bravery.

Ben Mortimer said: "My stepson and his friend showed pure bravery to prevent the rape of two girls.

"These two deserve a medal for putting themselves in danger. My stepson has multiple broken bones in his face due to the guys stamping on his face."

Shelly Metcalfe added: "Just so everyone knows. My brother and his friend stopped an attempted rape and they got beat up for it by two black men, one with short dreads and one with a shaved head."

Along with their close circles, the men were applauded by many on social media.

Georgie Priestley said: "These two men were attacked because they were trying to rescue someone from being raped. Without them, this could have been a story about a murdered woman."

Police have released descriptions of two men they want to speak to following yesterday's attack.

They said that both men are black and that one was wearing a white, short-sleeved t-shirt and black waistcoat with blue jeans, while the other was wearing dark clothing.
