How Joe Biden’s dog Major will make history in the White House

Joe Biden ’s election win means that the White House will have the pitta-patter of eight tiny feet in it’s corridors.

That’s because the Biden family has two German Shepherds, Champ and Major – meaning there will be two first pets.

And while the President-elect has broken records by receiving the most votes in a US election, Major is set to make his own little bit of history.

That’s because Major has had a ruff past, having once lived in an animal shelter.

And although many First Families have taken pups into the White House, never before has there been a rescue pet in the Oval Office.

When Major makes the move into 1,600 Pennsylvania Avenue he will be making doggy history.

Champ briefly joined the Biden family in 2008 when the President Elect was vice-president under Barack Obama.

Obama himself had two Portuguese Water Dogs staying at the famous address.

Jill Biden told the Washington Post as she prepared to leave the vice-presidential residence in 2017: “Of all of us, Champ is going to have the hardest time leaving this place.

  • Donald Trump's ex-wife Ivana brands him a 'bad loser' as he refuses to concede

“Champ has a built-in family here 24 hours a day with all the staff and security guards that keep little dog biscuits on hand for him.”

Major came along afterwards, when Mr Biden’s daughter Ashley saw a post on Facebook about puppies needing homes.

The soon-to-be 46th President contacted the centre and adopted Major, setting him on a path to history.

Bill Clinton, George Bush and Franklin D Roosevelt all had canine buddies with them when they took office.

Trump, who believes he won the election despite losing, has not had any four-legged friends during his stint as the leader of the free world.

He bucked tradition by being the first president since 1897 to not have a pet while in office.

He explained at a February 2019 rally in Texas: “I wouldn’t mind having one, honestly, but I don’t have any time.

“How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn?”
