Eyewitnesses have reported an explosion near a holiday home park, with firefighters now battling a huge blaze.

Ten fire engines have been dispatched to the scene on Vicarage Lane, near Hoo marina in Kent.

Dramatic pictures show flames along the coast and plumes of smoke rising into the air.

Kent Fire & Rescue said in a statement: "Firefighters are advising the public to avoid the area while the emergency services deal with the incident.

"A large amount of smoke is also coming from the fire, and so those living or working close to the area of the fire and the smoke plume, which includes the Hoo peninsula, are now being advised to close windows and doors as a precaution.

One witness told Kent Online: "I've seen gas bottles rocketing hundreds of feet high, this is the worse fire I've ever seen. It's two minutes from my house.

"There is a large holiday home park next door to the fire."
