A solemn Kate Middleton was snapped hiding her emotions behind a pair of sunglasses as she left Windsor Castle for the first time after the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

The wife of the Queen's grandson William was driving to pick up her children from school in Lambrook near Ascot this afternoon after they completed their first week of classes.

Kate had opted to stay at home with the children as a devastated William hotfooted it to Balmoral, Scotland to be with his grandmother yesterday.

William had touched down at Aberdeen Airport alongside Prince Andrew, Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward, and made it there about an hour before the death was made public.

However, at that point the Queen would have already passed away.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving British monarch in history, having ruled from 1952 until her death on September 8 2022.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry was also pictured leaving Balmoral earlier today, appearing "serious and downcast" but not "completely overcome by sorrow" after his grandmother's death, according to a body language expert.

The Duke of Sussex was seen being driven out of residence in the Scottish Highlands, and then again boarding a plane at Aberdeen Airport, after he travelled north yesterday to be with other members of the Royal Family.

There was a particularly poignant moment when an emotional Harry consoled airport staff who were visibly upset over the passing of his grandmother.

He was spotted resting his hand on the shoulder of one woman who looked particularly upset.

Speaking to the Daily Star, body language expert Adrianne Carter – who goes by The Face Whisperer on her website – said that the gesture was a sign of Harry's "genuine concern" for those around him.

She also explained that the gesture showed Harry is not "completely overcome" by emotions following the monarch's death.

Adrianne said: "Initially, Harry appears in the photos, with a serious and downcast expression. His entire demeanour, including his posture, exudes sadness.

"He's trying to shield his eyes by bringing his hand up to his forehead. Human beings do this when they need to shield themselves and are feeling vulnerable.

"The video shows him rubbing the blonde woman's shoulder as he walks to the plane. This is a gesture of comfort, and the shoulder is an area where touching won't be misunderstood and is a safe zone.

"In doing so, he demonstrates his genuine concern for the emotions of those around him and his ability to take a hands-on approach with anyone around him. With this action, he is able to make an emotional connection."

She concluded: "He seems sad and forlorn, but he isn't completely overcome by his sorrow, as he is able to console the woman who is escorting him."
