North Korean state media has released images of leader Kim Jong-un inspecting sites in Samjiyon in his first public activity in over one month.

Kim's latest absence comes in a series following a number breaks this year, which has caused rumours over his possible ill health.

Before today, he was last seen in state media reports on 12 October while in attendance at a missile exhibition in Pyongyang.

In the images released today, Kim appears to be as he can be seen wearing a black coat during the public engagement.

His absence from the North Korean media spotlight is reportedly his longest since 2014, according to the Independent.

State media reported that despite his lack of attendance at public events, Kim is still working on several matters behind the scenes.

Kim, 37, has taken eight breaks away from public activity this year with reason behind the absences unknown.

North Korea recently held an artillery shell fire tests designed to 'annihilate the enemy' over the weekend.

The state media reported that the drills come "at a time when the enthusiasm to undergo intensive training prevails throughout the Korean People's Army (KPA) for ushering in a new heyday in strengthening the state defence capabilities under the banner of self-defence".

General Rim Kwang Il, chief of the General Staff of the KPA, and commanders of the participating units watched the drills, but Kim was absent from the event.
