Man ‘armed with knife’ on loose around tube station as riot police scrambled

A man armed with a knife was spotted "running around" a London tube station as the capital’s police swarm the area in riot gear.

The Metropolitan Police were called to the scene at 6.21.pm following reports of a man "believed to be in possession of a knife."

It is understood the Met BTP and the National Police Air Service remain remain at the scene and the incident is ongoing.

According to a Transport for London worker, "several police vans including police in riot gear" were spotted at Upminster station.

The individual said a colleague alerted them to the threat after a man was seen "with a knife running around the station."

In a tweet, the TFL worker said: "A work colleague has reported that several police vans including police officers in riot gear are at #Upminster station because there is person with knife running around the station."

Other social media users reported a large police presence and seeing a helicopter overhead.

One said: "Helicopter overhead now!"

A second said: "Not sure what's going on at Upminster but it's unusual to have armed police."

"Geeza on the loose round Upminster with a machete, just one normal day 2020 I beg," a third added.

Cranham Police said: "Cranham SNT with MPS Upminster MPS Hylands currently assisting BTP and dog units around Upminster train station."

In a statement, Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 18:21hrs on Wednesday, 9 December to Upminster Station following reports of a man believed to be in possession of a knife.

"Officers from the Met, BTP and the National Police Air Service remain in attendance.

"There are no reported injuries.

"No arrests and enquiries continue."
