Man roped into threesome with blindfolded woman jailed and caned for rape

A young Singaporean man who was roped into having sex with another man's girlfriend without her consent has been sentenced to imprisonment and caning for rape.

Srihari Mahendran, 24, was found to have played a subordinate role on two separate occasions to the woman's then-boyfriend, who fantasised about watching another man have sex with her.

The boyfriend, a 28-year-old former police officer who cannot be named, testified in Singapore's High Court that he had proposed the idea of a threesome to his girlfriend but she had said no.

He then devised a scheme to secretly bring another man into the bedroom without her knowledge so he could watch and film the two having sex.

On April 29 2016, the man tied up his girlfriend and blindfolded her in a room at Hotel 81 Bugis before secretly letting in Srihari, whom he had met online.

They had sex which constitutes rape by deception, as the woman didn't know the man was not her boyfriend.

He pulled off the same trick at the M Social Hotel in August — but this time the woman sensed something was wrong. She removed her blindfold in time to see Srihari leaving.

Both men were later arrested at the hotel, the Straits Times reports.

The boyfriend pleaded guilty to abetting the rape and sexual assault of his girlfriend on two separate occasions.

He is currently serving a jail sentence of 19 years and 11 months and was also sentenced to 24 strokes of the cane — a common corporal punishment in Singapore.

Srihari contested his charges leading to a trial in which Eunice Lau, prosecuting, sought at least 19 years' jail and 18 strokes, arguing that he played a pivotal role in fulfilling the boyfriend's fantasy.

She also claimed the defendant derived pleasure from sexually assaulting the victim.

Ravinderpal Singh, defending, said his client was just 20 at the time of the assaults and had no prior convictions.

High Court judge Pang Khang Chau found that Srihari had done the bidding of the "real mastermind", the boyfriend, but said he couldn't ignore that he had contested his charges.

He found Srihari guilty of four counts of rape, one count of sexual assault by penetration, four counts of outrage of modesty, and one count of making an obscene film.

An 11th charge of transmitting obscene material was also taken into consideration in sentencing.

Srihari was sentenced to 17 years and 10 months' jail and 14 strokes of the cane.

His new lawyer says he will be filing an appeal, until which time Srihari will have to wear an electronic tag. His bail has also been increased from $60,000 (£33,440) to $100,000 (£55,740).
