Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have given a huge £100,000 donation to charity on the royal's birthday.

The couple made the gesture after being inspired by their fans to give money to Camfed which is an organisation campaigning for female education in Africa.

Harry, who turned 36 on Tuesday September 15, and Meghan, 39, had pledged to match the amount of money raised by their fans.

A cute message to their supporters said: "No better way to celebrate what really matters. Thank you to everyone who donated, Harry and Meghan."

The campaign to raise money for the charity began last month for Meghan's birthday on August 4.

Fans launched the #InspiredByMeghan fundraiser for Meghan’s birthday back in August, but soon changed it to #InspiredByHarry to mark his big day.

Camfed was delighted by the huge donation, tweeting: "Just in, a message from The Duke & Duchess of Sussex, who are matching your INSPIRING actions by making a $130,000 (£100,000) gift to Camfed."

Their fans were over the moon, taking to Twitter to praise the generous sum.

It is hoped the money will help 113 women.

Harry has been open about his love of Africa – he is a frequent visitor to the continent and called Botswana a place of "escapism" for him since his first visit after the death of his mum Princess Diana.

He took Meghan to Botswana to celebrate her 36th birthday on one of their first holidays as a couple.

One fan tweeted: "I love Harry and Meghan so much. I am so happy for you Camfed."

Another added: "Hope they have a wonderful day and beyond."

Harry received a number of happy birthday messages from members of the Royal Family today.

The Twitter account of his brother Prince William and Kate Middleton, both 38, said: "Wishing a very happy birthday to Prince Harry today!"

His grandmother the Queen, 94, said: "Wishing the Duke of Sussex a very happy birthday!"

His dad Prince Charles, 71, and stepmother the Duchess of Cornwall, 73, said: "Wishing a very happy birthday to The Duke of Sussex today!"

Harry spent his special day in Santa Barbara in California, US, with Meghan and 16-month-old son Archie.
