Murder accused ‘stabbed couple because he thought he was playing Fortnite’

A suspect accused of stabbing a couple to death in a cinema told a judge he was delusional and believed he was actually playing Fortnite.

Ergun S, 34, said he believed he was in the popular battle game and had to protect his daughter from being kidnapped by aliens wanting to take her to the North Pole.

The alleged killer said he suffers with delusions and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia – although he refused to regularly take medication.

Psychiatrists are expected to argue that he cannot be held accountable for the crime, the Sun reports.

The suspected knife attack took place inside a cinema in Groningen, Netherlands, last year.

Speaking in court, the accused said he felt like a character in the immensely popular cross-platform battle game.

He also claimed he has never actually played Fortnite.

Ergun said he had imagined being a tram driver in Rotterdam and that the tram was his friend.

The court heard how concerned family members started to worry when he lost 30 pounds.

Mental health services had planned to detain him for treatment, according to local outlet Algemeen Dagbald.

He told the court that he went to Groningen to find his daughter, and believed he could communicate with her telepathically and that he would save the world.

He said “Those thought became more and more fearful. I thought I was being followed.”

The accused claimed he saw visions of troops attacking his daughter and thought supernatural beings would abduct her.

Court documents state that when he was arrested he had wrapped himself in foil as he thought it was a superhero suit that would protect him.

His arrest came a day after he is alleged to have murdered a man, 56, and a 55-year-old female.

The couple had worked at the cinema for years as cleaners.

Ergun is believed to have snuck into the cinema to sleep after he found an unlocked door.

He is accused of hiding inside a closet before attacking the woman when she opened it and later killing the man who rushed to help.
