A bikini-clad body found dumped in a bin bag in the ocean has been identified as belonging to a 34-year-old woman.

Authorities have named Heather Rose Strickland as the person who was discovered in the sea just off Florida's Gulf Coast last weekend.

Her body had been found floating by a group of spearfishermen on Saturday, December 10 just off Egmont Key in Tampa Bay.

Fox News have revealed that Heather's death is now being treated as "suspicious" by the FBI who are also calling on anybody to come forward who might have any information that can help piece together the chain of events that led to the shocking discovery of her body.

When the fishermen quickly realised that the bag they had found did not contain rubbish, they discovered a canvas bag inside that they cut open, revealing human skin and what they thought was a bra strap or a bikini.

They called the police after making the gruesome discovery from their fishing boat 20km off the coast.

"The body was found wrapped in bedding in a plastic trash bag," FBI’s Tampa Field Office said.

Heather has been described as about 5ft 4in tall by the FBI with a tattoo on the right side of her neck of "B" and "E" written in Old English Script and another tattoo of a rose tattoo on the outside of her right thigh.

As her body was found in federal waters, the incident comes under the jurisdiction of the FBI.

The Daily Mail has reported that authorities are now awaiting the toxicology report to determine the cause of Heather's death as it remains unclear how her remains ended up in the Atlantic Ocean.

According to the FBI, Heather originally hailed from north Florida before moving to the Tampa Bay area, where she had lived for the last five years.
