A deluge of slow-moving, heavy rain is forecast to hit the UK all weekend the Met Office has warned. Intense lightning storms, thundery downpours and flooding are likely across parts of the UK over the next two days. Britain has been hit by diving temperatures and torrential rain ever since Storm Evert hit at the end of July.

9.48am update: Warning areas in full

One warning for Sunday is in place until 9pm and is for

  • East Midlands
  • North East England
  • North West England
  • Northern Ireland
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders
  • Strathclyde
  • Wales
  • West Midlands
  • Yorkshire and Humber

A further warning is in place until 11.59pm and is for

  • Central, Tayside and Fife
  • Grampian
  • Highlands and Eilean Siar
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders
  • Strathclyde

9.40am update: Met Office extends yellow thunderstorm warnings to Sunday

Forecasters have extended the yellow thunderstorm alert into Sunday, with the latest warning lasting until midnight.

The Met Office warns: “Heavy rain is expected to develop in some areas overnight, Sunday then expected to bring further slow-moving heavy, thundery downpours.

“Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 20-30 mm rain may fall in a short space of time with 50-80 mm building up over several hours in a few places.

“Many of the showers and thunderstorms will ease on Sunday evening but there is a small risk of heavy rain persisting into Sunday night in a few places.”

9.02am update: Met Office warn of flooding, torrential rain and thunder today

Warnings are in place for thunder across the UK today, and this morning the Met Office cautioned travel disruption and flooding could be seen.

Tweeting the forecasters wrote: “The latest for #Saturday morning

“A band of #rain to move east across England and Wales, breaking down into heavy showers with thunder possible

“Elsewhere sunny spells with showers in W and S.

“Warnings are in force as travel disruption and localised #flooding are possible”
