Space arms race could bring ‘great consequences’ to world’s militaries – expert

Experts have warned that there is a potential for 'greater consequences' as world military leaders have begun to 'accelerate' the space arms race.

The Secure World Foundation’s 2022 edition of the Global Counterspace Capabilities: An Open Source Assessment warns that as space becomes increasingly important for human life there is an increased risk of damage to satellites due to weapons being developed around the world.

The reports said: "The existence of counter-space capabilities is not new, but the circumstances surrounding them are. Today there are increased incentives for the development, and potential use, of offensive counter-space capabilities.

"There are also greater potential consequences from their widespread use that could have global repercussions well beyond the military, as huge parts of the global economy and society are increasingly reliant on space applications."

Brian Weeden, director of program planning at the Secure World Foundation and one of the editors of the report, has also claimed that more countries with space weapons are being added to the list every year.

The nations currently involved in the space arms race are the US, Russia, China, India, Australia, France, Iran, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and the UK.

In 2019, reports emerged that a nuclear war in space would be catastrophic for the human civilisation as Earth would transform into a Hiroshima-style landscape with humans being wiped out in a matter of days.

There are those that believe new fleets of military craft are already being built, pointing to various UFO sightings across the US in recent months.
