A member of Spain's Royal Family has been caught up in the shocking shooting at a popular Marbella nightclub today (Monday, July 18).

A lone gunman opened fire in the famous Opium nightclub, leaving five people injured with two in a serious condition in hospital.

The shooting happened after a fight reportedly broke out.

Initial reports suggested a woman had died in the incident, but police have confirmed there have been no deaths.

And now Spanish media is reporting that the grandson of the king of Spain Juan Carlos I, Felipe Juan Froilan de Marichalar was celebrating his 24th birthday in the swanky club at the time of the scary incident.

He is fourth in line to the throne behind his cousins (King Felipe's daughters) Leonor, Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia of Spain, and his mother, Infanta Elena.

It is not known if he was directly involved in the shooting, or if any of his team were hit, and police have also not confirmed any specifics about the event.

However, a spokesman for Spain’s National Police confirmed five people were injured, including one seriously.

He said: “Two of the victims, a man who is Irish and a woman, are in intensive care in hospital. The suspected gunman is still in hospital.”

And someone near the scene told local news: “I looked out because I knew that these were not fireworks like the ones that had been launched on other nights. I saw many people running and leaving the premises so I called the police."

The local also claimed that he saw around 18 police cars at the scene, along with three ambulances.

Police confirmed a 32-year-old Irishman was one of the two people in intensive care with "serious" injuries after he was shot in the chest.

The shooter, who was arrested, was thought to have been injured by a knife to the chest and head and is now under police custody in hospital awaiting medical treatment.

Local police were called 112 times, Sur News said, and they are still investigating the incident.

Video of the incident shows punters running in all directions as a gun can be heard going off in the background.

The cause of the fight, which took place around 1am, is still unknown.

South African DJ Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, was among those due to perform at Opium Beach Club last night (Sunday, July 17).

The Opium club is one of Marbella's most popular venues during the summer.

Describing itself as the "ultimate beach club experience", it is basically one giant swimming pool surrounded by outdoor four-poster beds, posh sun-loungers and a big screen with a DJ booth.
