Strongman, 70, filmed trying to lift 25kg weights with his eye sockets

A strongman has attempted to break one of his most dangerous world records – "heaviest weight lifted by both eye sockets".

Manjit Singh, 70, from Leicester, was set to lift 25 kilograms as part of the stunt this week, marking the annual Guinness World Record Day.

It involved placing two large hooks into his eye sockets. But things didn't quite go to plan, and the current record still stands at 24 kilograms which Manjit still holds, LeicestershireLive reports.

The Ironman – as he is known – was unable to break the record after having trouble with keeping the hooks in place, which he made himself.

"I had tried it a few days back and it was fine but on the day one of the hooks was actually coming out," he said.

He added: "It's a very dangerous stunt."

A slip of the hooks could lead to a dangerous facial injury of which Manjit was not willing to risk.

With no doubt that he can break the record, Manjit, who already has more than 68 records to his name, said he will reattempt it in January 2021.

He thanked Vinod Kotecha for organising the event which took place at the Confederation of Indian Organisations in Belgrave, Leicester.

Ahead of his reattempt, he said "no preparations [were] needed".

"You just go for it on the day, there's no training or preparation needed.

"I'd say it's 100% mental – it's mind over matter," he told LeicestershireLive.

Another advantage of his, he said, was his experience. He celebrated his 70th birthday in March.

At 70 years old and 75 kilograms in weight, Manjit said that "people are shocked" when they see what he can do.

"They don't believe me when I say I can pull a bus with my hair or blow up a hot water bottle with my mouth but it's an advantage to me," he said.

His previous records include the farthest distance to pull a single-decker bus with the ears and the heaviest vehicle pulled by human hair.

"Age is not a barrier, you just carry on," he said.

The strongman admitted, despite not training ahead of a challenge like this one, that he does occasionally get out his hot water bottle to blow up for practice as it "takes a lot of strength".

Earlier this year, he was set to appear on America's Got Talent, hoping to lift one of show's judges, Heidi Klum, using his ears.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, his appearance has been delayed until a future series.

With no plans to retire from adding to his numerous records, Manjit looks forward to his next stunt.
