Super advanced ‘Phoenix Ghost’ kamikaze drones shipped to Ukraine in £620m deal

The USA has sent a haul of new, technologically advanced drones to Ukraine that could bolster the country in their fight against invading Russian forces.

New weaponry sent over to Ukraine is called the "Phoenix Drone" and they're set to be sent to the frontlines in a £620million ($800million) lethal aid package announced by President Joe Biden.

Part of the package are 121 technologically advanced Phoenix Ghost Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems, with the collection of drones announced by White House press secretary John Kirby.

The sophisticated weaponry is made by AEVEX Aerospace in California, and not all the details of how the drone works have been released.

Kirby did explain the application of the "single use" drone and the design, saying: "This was rapidly developed by the Air Force in response specifically to Ukrainian requirements."

The Phoenix Ghost is similar to Switchblade drones, with Daily Star reporting they could hit targets from up to 50 miles away.

New supplies from the US Government will see small, unmanned drones fly a short distance before using a relatively small warhead to take out targets.

Reports also indicate the drones are hard to detect and effective for this type of combat.

Kirby continued: "It provides similar capabilities to the Switchblade series of unmanned systems — similar capabilities, but not exact. There’s differences in the scope of capability for the Phoenix Ghost."

The White House press secretary refused to comment on whether or not the drones had already been used on the battlefield and also ignored questions on how exactly the Phoenix Ghost works, UNILad reports.

Kirby did reveal that the new drone system would "require some minimal training" for Ukrainian forces to be able to use them, adding that US forces are "working through those training requirements directly with the Ukrainian armed forces".

Speaking of the package for Ukraine, President Biden said: "We're in a critical window now of time where they're going to set the stage for the next phase of war".
