Teen sentenced to life in prison for murder of Cherokee Trail rugby player during vape deal

Lloyd Chavez IV was a standout rugby player at Cherokee Trail High School before a 2019 shooting during a deal for vaping products took the 18-year-old’s life.

Kenneth Gallegos, now 19, was sentenced for the crime on Wednesday in Arapahoe County Court to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.

That sentence is the current mandatory sentence for any first-degree murder conviction if the defendant was a juvenile at the time of the crime.

Gallegos was 17 when he, Juliana Serrano, Dominic Stager and Demarea Mitchell went to purchase vape juice and other vaping products from Chavez at his home in the 21500 block of East Powers Lane in Centennial on May 8, 2019.

That interaction resulted in Chavez’s death.
