The war enters its 13th day on Tuesday as the senior US defence official said Putin has utilised nearly all of the more than 150,000 forces placed outside Ukraine before the invasion began. The official added that Russian troops are “frustrated by a stiff Ukrainian resistance as well as their own internal challenges”.

They said: “It appears as though the Russians are increasing their use of long-range fires to supplement or to make up for the lack of ground movements that they have had and the lack of air superiority that they don’t enjoy.”

Ukraine has also claimed Russia forces are “demoralised” due to heavy losses. The Ukrainian armed forces daily update said the pace of advance from troops has “slowed significantly”.

Russian troops ‘demoralised’, says Ukraine

Ukrainian military and intelligence said Russian invasion continued but has “slowed significantly” in recent days.

The force also said a second senior Russian commander, Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, first deputy commander of Russia’s 41st army, had been killed near the besieged city of Kharkiv.

A statement added that Russian troops are “demoralised” due to heavy losses and “in general, the moral and psychological state of the enemy is low.”
