The UK Defence Ministry said the large convoy of Russian troops, northwest of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has made little progress in over a week. It added there is a “notable decrease” in Russian air activity, putting it down to the “unexpected effectiveness and endurance of Kyiv’s air defence”.

In a statement, the ministry said as casualties mount, Putin will be forced to draw from across the Russian army to replace losses.

It comes as the biggest talks so far in the conflict are due to take place between Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

Ukraine and Russian foreign ministers to hold talks

Ukraine’s foreign minister has arrived in Turkey for the first high-level talks with Russia since the invasion began over two weeks ago.

Dmytro Kuleba will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Mr Kuleba has tempered expectations for a ceasefire agreement or other results from the meeting.

Kuleba urged Lavrov to approach the talks “in good faith, not from a propagandistic perspective.”

“I will say frankly that my expectations of the talks are low,” Kuleba said.

He added: “We are interested in a ceasefire, liberating our territories and the third point is to resolve all humanitarian issues.”
