World’s first exorcism centre created for ‘those in bondage with the devil’

The world's first ever centre for exorcism is being constructed for those who are "in bondage with the devil".

The Archdiocese of Manila is currently building the "ground breaking" centre in the Philippines.

The centre will be used as a headquarters of the Philippine Association of Catholic Exorcists (PACE), the Ministry of Exorcism and the Ministry on Visions and Phenomena.

The Archdiocese of the Manila Office of Exorcism said it will be a “product of more than seven years of prayers, planning and fundraising.”

In a statement, the archdiocese said: "This religious structure will be the first of its kind in Asia, if not the world."

Francisco Syquia, director of the Manila Office of Exorcism, said it will be for people "in bondage with the devil" who are "therefore the poorest of the poor and are usually overlooked".

“We are grateful to you our benefactors who have until this point supported the Saint Michael Centre," he added.

An exorcism is a type of pray used by the Catholic Church that battles against the power of the devil.

It is completed by reciting readings and prayers to the individual while using sacred symbols and water.

A "major exorcism" can only be performed on someone by a priest or bishop with special permission and focuses on “the expulsion of demons or to the liberation [of a person] from demonic possession”.

According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the church has continued to move "cautiously" when looking at alleged cases of "demonic possession".

It said: “Although rare, genuine cases of demonic possession should be addressed in a balanced manner with the utmost care being extended to the afflicted person."
