The Ukrainian President said hundreds of thousands of citizens had been deported to Russia.

He told Channel 24: “They are placed in special filtration camps, documents are confiscated, and humiliated. How many of them are killed is unknown.”

It comes as civilians are fleeing from areas of eastern Ukraine ahead of an anticipated offensive by Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, there have been unconfirmed reports that Russian forces had used chemical weapons in the besieged port city of Mariupol.
